| Sociology: Pay attention to this one. |
| 2007-01-27 |
I am currently confronted with the issue of seperation. Not in the sense that one would think, because I am in constant conversation with my Master; and I do not miss my "biological" (or what one would assume to be so) family. I am more upset with the current issue of seperation from ones that I once held as close to me as family; as close as sisters and brothers. It hurts me on such an emotional level that I am pulled so far away from these people only due to our current academic standings; who knew that college would rip such close companionships apart?
Next, the discussion of sociology as a possible choice for myself, when speaking about collegiate majors. I believe that sociology is not an "easy" major, although many of my peers in other disciplines seem to be under this sort of foolery. Sociology may be a social science, which is the study of the social. However, there is so much more than attending parties and observing the way in which individuals interact with one another. It is more the multitudinal schools of thought on why these individuals are acting in these ways, I believe that this makes sociology so much more fascinating. Continuing on this thought, I would like to give you all something to think about. If you have ever witnessed the major motion picture known as "the matrix trilogies", you will notice that a great deal (at least within the first of the triology) is spent discussing what is the real? Obviously we go to our jobs, and we follow these almost pre-determined patterns of what we're supposed to do. However, how do we know that the reality in which we live is actually reality? We go to these jobs, because in part, it is the social "norm" to do so. In a sense, it is what society thinks of as being the correct thing to do, and deviating from this norm would present obvious rebellion. HOWEVER, the point that I'm trying to make, which goes along with Post-Modern Theory (one school of thought within sociology), is that we are in this environment that we assume to be true. We know what an office looks like, simply because we have seen images which society projects to be accurate representations of an office. However, the post-modern theory brings forth the concept, is this actually an office? Is this really what an office looks like?
ARE WE ACTUALLY IN THE TRUE MODERN REALITY?
I'm sure that's a bit of a cluster-fuck (not the candy bar, although nougaty-fuck sounds great right now) to some people, because it gives you the opportunity to test out your social norms and really question the environment that surrounds you.
ON a totally seperate note however, I would like to once again say that the image to the left of this blog (or the right for the dyslexics in all of us) is actually a photograph of myself. However, this image was taken several years ago, and I have since changed on a physical level. But thanks to all of you for your inquiries about it. |
